Even after nearly three years here, our intestines are still very welcome hosts to a number of guests. Sometimes these parasites make a fast exit, but sometimes they stick around and prey on everything you eat. For up to years if you don't seek treatment.
Earlier this year, Nick was having a very hard time getting rid of some parasites, and he decided to pay his first visit to the gastrointestinal doctor. After diagnosing Nick with a case of the amoebas, he prescribed a common amoeba and worm med called Vermox Plus. One dose of two pills, and voilá, he was cured!
After hearing about some friends who take a course of Vermox every six months to purge themselves of any unwanted parasites, we thought it wasn't such a bad idea to do the same ($5 USD is a small price to pay compared to having to visit the GI doc every time you've got problems. And there are LOTS of problems.) In fact, Nick's parents said that when they were growing up in India, they would take a spoonful of castor oil every six months to flush out their intestinal tracts. I like the idea of natural castor oil, but be ready to take a day off of work!
Obviously, Vermox doesn't cure all our stomach ailments, but I have to say that it has been pretty life-changing :). And with the hot weather and sub-par food storage practices, just imagine the kind of feast amoebas and worms are enjoying these days...
We do the Vermox Plus cleanse every six months too! It's kind of funny the things you have to worry about living in Mexico.
ReplyDeleteyou too?? vermox is changing lives!! i'm surprised i don't see it advertised more because i wish i had known about it two years earlier.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip! I am moving to Pachuca, Hidalgo in a little more than two months and I have been concerned about this issue. I'm bookmarking this entry for future reference.
ReplyDeletegreengagirl--welcome (soon) to the neighborhood. if you like the outdoors, pachuca is surrounded by some great parks and other natural beauties. and lots of places to rent cabins, hike, and scale mountains. hope the transition for you goes smoothly.
ReplyDeleteWe have a house in the Yucatan and visit 4-6 times a year. We don't normally get sick but everyone in the family has had it a couple of times, last week we all got it. We are just learning about the Vermox Plus every six month routine and wondered if anyone who is taking it like that has had any side effects? Has anyone taking it every six months still gotten sick? Thanks,
ReplyDeletePaul M
Hi Paul,
ReplyDeleteNever tried Vermox every six months; just used it occassionally when nothing else worked to heal the stomach. Good luck!
Hey there. I know this is kind of late to comment, but I found your blog searching for 'vermox plus'. I am in Mexico city and accidentally drunk some water with my pasta. I've been sick for about 3 days so I thought I would give this a shot. Hope it works! :)
ReplyDeleteJosie,
ReplyDeleteA big uh-oh! Hope you feel better soon. Vermox is worth a shot -- sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.
Just took mine... Hope it works :O
ReplyDeleteI am Mexican and find it very amusing to read all your comments. For those of you who did not find Vermox useful, you probably had some other parasite, not amoeba. But hey, there are stange things in EVERY country; boredom was a big issue. There, in order to have fun, you have to get drunk!!! By the way, do NOT drink alcohol 2 days before and 2 after VERMOX PLUS
ReplyDeleteI have been living in Mexico for years now and take vermox plus every 6 months, sometimes I skip a 6month stint and I must say it works. If u ever watch the tv show .monsters inside me. You will want to try something
ReplyDeleteCan someone tell me when to take Vermox Plus? I was told before 2 meals in the same day. I always have coffee in the morning before breakfast. Will this affect the efficacy?
ReplyDeleteI have just started Vermox. Hope it works.
ReplyDeleteThe Vermox Plus box (in Spanish) says you can take it at any time of day and to take both tablets together at the same time. No special diet is required. I take it before bed and sleep as usual. I have never had any side effects, even if I've been drinking wine. I live in Mexico and take it every 6 months.
ReplyDeleteVermox treats worms; the Plus in Vermox Plus means it also treats amebas (one-celled organisms). My friend who's lived in Mexico 35 years recommended Nitazoxanide (US brand name Alinia). I looked it up and it is used to treat giardia, which is caused by a protozoa (another one-celled organism). Nitazoxanide is also used to treat intestinal parasitic infections. If Vermox Plus doesn't do the trick, my friend says that Nitazoxanide "gets everything." But you might want to do some research first. In the US you need a prescription for Nitazoxanide. I read that you should take Nitazoxanide with food.
