Enjoying the Good Life

Yesterday, while taking a coffee break after a long stroll through town, my mom asked my dad to take a picture of us "enjoying the good life." I was worried beforehand that they would try to find something to convince us that our lives back in Texas was more desirable. But between the perfectly sunny weather, the awesome quesadillas, and the mangoes, they couldn't stop gushing about how great it is here.

We did our short visit to San Miguel de Allende, and, yes, I'm eating my words. It was beautiful, tranquil, and so worth visiting over and over again. Like I expected, there were Texas plates all over town. The highlight of our trip was to El Charco del Ingenio, a natural botanic garden, showcasing local fauna and cacti from all over the country. I am so in awe of how diverse cacti can be -- more pictures to come.

I'm pretty sure my parents are already planning their return trip. Having grown up in Asia, they felt like the way of life here is similar to the way they grew up -- fruit and vegetable markets, walking a lot, taking the bus, boiling the water, noisy streets, and hoards of people. My dad was even able to tighten his belt an extra notch! I'll have to work on adding an extra notch the next visit.

  1. Awww! That is so great that your parents are having a great time visiting.

Six months after we moved to Mexico, my grandfather came to visit. I was worried that he was going to find fault with my small town and want us to move back to the States. But after his one week stay, he was just as smitten as I was. :)

  2. They're now back in the states, and my dad emailed saying how much his perception changed after having visited. For the better, of course.
